Restoration 101 : Chapter IV : Ford Cortina MK3 - More parts & finally back home

November 17, 2019 | Ryk Mchoraji

2019 just flew by !!!

Was just there like :

Eh ... nakuanga macho nne

Short story long ...

I still don't have the resources to go into sandblasting (something I really want to do so I can finally have a concrete diagnosis of the cabin's integrity - roll cage into consideration.

Been doing some thinking behind my creative style - the most accurately descriptive word I could find was 'inconsistent'. Once I learn a technique and prove it is a level above ... I move on.

Started making handcrafted tshirts and always promised myself I would drop an airbrush collection in 2015; never did it until Tina. wow

So, we continue ... parts

Tuesday, 1st January 2019

PART No. 64 : Paasche Double Action Talon Airbrush (high definition detailing)

PART No. 65 : Paasche SinlgeAction H-Series Airbrush (moderate definition detailing)

PART No. 66 : Paasche mini air compressor (110Volts - ouch ! I forgot America uses different current rating from UK / East) will have to get a transformer for that oversight.

So, whole work unit plus PART No. 67 :a step down transformer needed to power

Wondering what these are for?

Used to be a full time fashion artist majoring in handmade tshirts and started experimenting on my painting skills using compressed air - would complement by hand brush technique and empower me to do some wall art one day.

A clip of tshirt art in 2011

When applied to cars, we can create the master pieces below;

Chalk effect ...

Inclined towards same color hue / transition technique

The Talon airbrush allows fine detailing as below - even more

It will be a challenge integrating a ghost airbrush detailing into the muscle car and still preserve that street cred.

In terms of paint - found this VW captured in the RetroHillClimb event in Australia that matches the PinkRed that was original to Tina but - different type of paint.

In regards to the airbrushed stripes, mat is a floating idea ...

We will see, for now, we continue building the parts inventory

Royal mail I say ...

PART No. 66 : Rear Tortion Bar and lower swing arms ... mechanic lost one of them at the garage ! Aves bana ... kuchoma

PART No. 137 : Toyota 4AGE Independent Throttle Bodies, Fuel injectors, Throttle Body Sensor, gaskets, casing

Below is the carb that Tina came in --- quite good at economy delivering:

Horsepower net:

50 kW / 68 PS / 67 hp (DIN) / @5200 Revs

Torque net:

113 Nm / 83 ft-lb / @2800 Revs

I then decided to take the Weber 32/36 DGAV Double Carb to raise the performance specs:

Horsepower net:

72 kW / 98 PS / 97 hp (DIN) / @5500 Revs

Torque net:

151 Nm / 111 ft-lb / @3500 Revs

that would have been 45% power increase !!! complemented with double vacuum sound

With the Double Weber, Tina's power plant would have looked like this:

Unfortunately, I want her inner to look as good as her outer ... so decided to push it a bit further

Through a Cars & Chrome member; Rohan via WhatsApp Group, I got bigger lungs !

After a few phone calls, a hand-full of pictures and a Little Cab shuttle across town this was delivered:

ow, a silver head

nostrils

housing allows one point of entry and muffles engine noise

Throttle closed - kusimama

Throttle open - kuenda! kuenda!

serious cleaning and dressing required (soot and grease)

Throttle position sensor

Fuel Injectors and gaskets

Whole set up

Mean - Meaner - MEANEST !!!

You guy My guy (looooool)

We must pay respect to Toyota 4AGE intake tech

I.T.Bs (Independent Throttle Boddies) on the far right

comparison in size of lungs available

This particular intake in known as a 'Silver Top' ratings decoded through the manifold color

Each cylinder is fed through it's independent throttle body - gives faster engine response as it eliminates air-flow restrictions but can hurt performance if compression is not tuned to the new fuel to air ratio.

this is how they work:

2.1 Ford Pinto on injection. Built by Vulcan Engineering shared by Steve Curson

1600 Pinto First Start on ZX750 bike carbs fitted danST trumpet kit

in regards to aesthetic finish, I am aiming towards this:

How would the engine bay look with these?

Still considering having them vertical for spacing and that trumpet tower look :

Plugs in, fuel in ...

1! 2! 3! 4! all pistons firing

or maintain horizontal angle and have the trumpets parallel to the ground

For now, that marks the end on wave 2 of parts coming in ... in fact, I had to sell the Subaru bucket seats to cater to an emergency - so interior design ... if you know some classic bucket seats hidden somewhere, please reach out via WhatsApp on 0724917959.

Hundreds of queries come in asking about how far the store is filled with her parts; well this is how many organs we have for the surgery excluding rims, suspension, engine, gearbox and upholstery :

As for Tina's curvy body, it was time to bring her back home - her stage in the garage was overdue.

Tuesday, ‎2 ‎July ‎2019

Went over to Aves' garage and took her back home !

The journey posed it's own challenges but we reached

She is meant to fit in here - I didn't even measure !!!

Problem is - we have another occupant in the same space !

Labour force couldn't believe what I had suggested

Off you go

Magic carpet

Dangling'

Touch part is about to start

Couldn't fit !

Carried her in when we managed to remove 'Meli' - we will revisit her in a decade's time or less God willing

lol !

Half way there

On her side

Doors in

Tidy up to return Meli to her resting position

Finally

Small reward to the labour force

Well, sadly this means she is going to be hidden away for quite some time before we get funds to move into full body sand-blasting and then rework the floor, chassis and new roll-cage.

If that is done - we go into engine tuning and paintwork.

See you in Chapter 5 - Thank you for taking your time, love and support.
